# How Much Protein Do You Need on a GLP-1?

> Most adults on a GLP-1 do well with about 80 to 120 grams of protein a day, or 1.0 to 1.5 grams per kilogram of body weight, with at least 1.2 g/kg advised for most people. Spread it out: 25 to 30 grams at each meal, eating the protein first. These medicines cut appetite, so it is easy to fall short without noticing. Protein works best with strength exercise 2 to 3 times a week. If you have kidney disease, get a personal target from your care team first.

GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Zepbound, Mounjaro) lower your appetite, so you eat less and lose weight. Eating less also makes it easy to come up short on protein. This guide explains how much you need and how to get it when you are not hungry.

## Why Protein Matters More Right Now

Most of the weight you lose on these medicines is fat, which is the goal. But some of it is muscle and other lean tissue. In studies, roughly 25–39% of the weight lost came from lean mass rather than fat.[[8]](https://dom-pubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/dom.70666)[[5]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39996356/)

Muscle is about more than strength. It supports your balance, helps prevent falls, keeps your metabolism up, and makes it easier to keep weight off long term.[[4]](https://dom-pubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/dom.15728)[[6]](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12325-026-03750-w)

Because you are eating less overall, you can fall short on protein without realizing it, even when you feel you are eating normally.[[6]](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12325-026-03750-w) Enough protein, together with strength exercise, is the main way to protect muscle while you lose fat.[[4]](https://dom-pubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/dom.15728)[[3]](https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1530-891X(25)00977-2)

## How Much Protein You Need

Most guidelines suggest more protein than the old "minimum" amount while you are actively losing weight.[[1]](https://www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587(26)00122-1/abstract)[[2]](https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0002-9165(25)00240-0)[[3]](https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1530-891X(25)00977-2)

- **By body weight:** 1.0 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day.[[1]](https://www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587(26)00122-1/abstract) Current guidance generally recommends at least 1.2 g/kg per day for most people.[[3]](https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1530-891X(25)00977-2)
- **As a simple number:** roughly 80 to 120 grams of protein per day works for many adults.[[2]](https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0002-9165(25)00240-0)
- **As a floor:** try not to go below about 60 grams a day.

**Quick math:** divide your weight in pounds by 2.2 to get kilograms, then multiply by 1.2. A person who weighs 176 lb (80 kg) would aim for about 96 grams a day.

Your clinician may base your target on an adjusted weight rather than your full current weight, so ask what number is right for you.

## Spread It Across the Day

Your body builds and keeps muscle best when protein is spread out, not packed into one meal.[[1]](https://www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587(26)00122-1/abstract)

- Aim for **25 to 30 grams at each main meal**.
- Add a protein-rich snack if you need it to reach your total.
- Three or four smaller meals are often easier than two large ones.

## What a Serving of Protein Looks Like

| Food | Portion | Protein |
|---|---|---|
| Chicken or turkey breast | 3–4 oz (palm-sized) | About 25–30 g |
| Fish or seafood | 3–4 oz | About 20–25 g |
| Cottage cheese | 1 cup | About 25 g |
| Greek yogurt | 1 cup | About 15–20 g |
| Lentils or beans, cooked | 1 cup | About 15–18 g |
| Tempeh | 3–4 oz | About 15–20 g |
| Firm tofu | 3–4 oz | About 8–12 g |
| Milk or soy milk | 1 cup | About 8 g |
| Egg | 1 large | About 6 g |
| Protein shake or powder | 1 serving | Often 20–30 g |

## Getting Enough When You Are Not Hungry

The hard part is that these medicines make you feel full fast. These strategies help:[[4]](https://dom-pubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/dom.15728)[[7]](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13244000/)

- **Eat protein first.** Start each meal with the eggs, fish, chicken, or yogurt before filling up on other foods.[[1]](https://www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587(26)00122-1/abstract)
- **Choose protein that is filling but not bulky.** Fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, skinless chicken or turkey, tofu, beans and lentils, and nuts or nut butters.[[3]](https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1530-891X(25)00977-2)
- **Eat smaller meals more often.** Four small meals may be easier than three large ones.[[3]](https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1530-891X(25)00977-2)
- **Use a shake or bar when food is hard.** One with at least 20 grams of protein can fill the gap on days when solid food is unappealing.[[7]](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13244000/)
- **If you feel sick,** try cooler or blander protein foods and sip liquids such as a yogurt drink or protein shake instead of forcing a full meal.[[7]](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13244000/) More ideas: [managing nausea on GLP-1s](/learn/how-to-manage-nausea-on-glp1-medications).

## A Sample Day (About 100 g of Protein)

| Meal | Example | Protein |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | 2 eggs plus a small Greek yogurt | About 25 g |
| Lunch | Grilled chicken or tempeh with vegetables | About 30 g |
| Snack | Protein shake or cottage cheese | About 20 g |
| Dinner | Fish or beans with vegetables | About 25 g |

Adjust the portions to your own target and appetite. For the rest of the plate, see [what to eat on a GLP-1](/learn/what-to-eat-on-a-glp1).

## Protein Alone Is Not Enough

Eating protein by itself will not fully protect your muscle. You also need strength (resistance) exercise, which tells your body to keep the muscle it has.[[4]](https://dom-pubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/dom.15728)[[3]](https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1530-891X(25)00977-2)

- Strength exercise **2 to 3 times per week**, working the legs, back, chest, and arms.
- Regular walking or other activity on top, building toward about **150 minutes per week**.
- Start gently and build up, especially in the first weeks or after a dose increase, when tiredness and stomach side effects are more common.[[7]](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13244000/)

## Who Needs a Different Target

- **Kidney disease:** you may need less protein. Your care team will give you a specific number, so do not aim high without checking first.[[1]](https://www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587(26)00122-1/abstract)[[3]](https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1530-891X(25)00977-2)
- **Older adults:** the risk of muscle loss is higher, so hitting the target matters even more.[[1]](https://www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587(26)00122-1/abstract)[[6]](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12325-026-03750-w)
- **Very high intakes:** above about 2 g/kg per day is generally not recommended unless your clinician advises it.

## The Rest of Your Plate

Eating less also makes it easier to come up short on vitamins and minerals. Fill the non-protein part of your plate with vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and beans, and drink enough fluids.[[3]](https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1530-891X(25)00977-2) Your clinician may recommend a multivitamin or check levels such as vitamin D, calcium, iron, or B12. Ask before starting supplements on your own. More: [vitamin deficiencies on GLP-1s](/learn/vitamin-deficiencies-on-glp1s).

## When to Call Your Care Team

Contact your clinician if:[[6]](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12325-026-03750-w)[[7]](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13244000/)

- You feel weaker, have trouble standing up from a chair, or notice your grip or strength slipping
- You cannot keep food or fluids down, or nausea and vomiting are severe
- You are losing weight very fast (more than about 1–2 pounds per week over time)
- You consistently cannot eat enough protein despite these tips; a dietitian referral can help

## The Short Version

Make protein the priority at every meal, aim for your personal daily target (about 80–120 grams for many adults), spread it across the day, add strength exercise a few times a week, and stay in touch with your care team. That is how you lose fat while keeping the muscle that keeps you strong.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much protein should I eat per day on a GLP-1?

A common target is 1.0 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, with at least 1.2 g/kg advised for most people. For many adults that works out to roughly 80 to 120 grams a day. Your clinician may base the number on an adjusted weight, so ask what is right for you.

### Is 60 grams of protein a day enough on a GLP-1?

Treat about 60 grams as a floor, not a goal. Most guidance aims higher during active weight loss, around 80 to 120 grams a day for many adults, because you are eating less overall and need more protein to protect muscle.

### Do I need protein shakes on Wegovy or Zepbound?

Not if you can meet your target with food. A shake or bar with at least 20 grams of protein is a useful backup on days when solid food is unappealing, especially when nausea is bad or right after a dose increase.

### Can I eat too much protein on a GLP-1?

Very high intakes, above about 2 grams per kilogram per day, are generally not recommended unless your clinician advises it. If you have kidney disease you may need less protein than the usual targets, so check with your care team before aiming high.
