# Oral Wegovy vs. Rybelsus: They Are Not the Same Medication

> Wegovy tablets and Rybelsus both contain semaglutide, but they are not interchangeable. Rybelsus (3, 7, 14 mg) is approved for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy tablets are approved for weight management and build up to a much higher 25 mg daily dose; in their main study, adults lost about 13.6% of body weight over 64 weeks. Both are taken the same way — empty stomach, a sip of water, 30-minute wait. Never take both.

Wegovy tablets and Rybelsus are two tablet forms of the same medicine, **semaglutide**. They look similar on paper, but they're approved for different purposes at very different doses — and they aren't interchangeable.

Semaglutide belongs to a family of medicines called **GLP-1 receptor agonists**. They act like a natural gut hormone that helps control blood sugar, slows how fast your stomach empties, and reduces appetite so you feel full sooner and eat less.

## The Short Answer

The big difference is **why each one is approved and how strong the dose is:**

- **Rybelsus** is approved to treat **type 2 diabetes** — it lowers blood sugar and can lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with diabetes at high risk. It comes in 3 mg, 7 mg, and 14 mg tablets.[[2]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=27f15fac-7d98-4114-a2ec-92494a91da98)
- **Wegovy tablets** (oral semaglutide 25 mg, approved in December 2025) are approved for **long-term weight management** in adults who have obesity, or who have overweight and a weight-related health problem such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. The target dose, 25 mg, is much higher than the diabetes tablet.[[3]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=ee06186f-2aa3-4990-a760-757579d8f77b)

## Side-by-Side Comparison

| | Rybelsus | Wegovy tablets |
|---|---|---|
| Active drug | Semaglutide | Semaglutide (same drug) |
| Main purpose | Lower blood sugar in type 2 diabetes; lower heart attack and stroke risk in high-risk diabetes | Long-term weight loss and keeping weight off; lower heart attack and stroke risk in adults with heart disease and excess weight |
| Who it's for | Adults with type 2 diabetes | Adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition |
| Tablet strengths | 3 mg, 7 mg, 14 mg | 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg, then 25 mg maintenance |
| Weight loss | Modest; not its main goal | About 13.6% of body weight on average over 64 weeks |
| Used with | Diet and exercise, often alongside other diabetes medicines | A reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity |

## Watch for Look-Alike Strengths

The diabetes tablet is also sold as **Ozempic tablets**, a newer formulation that comes in **1.5 mg, 4 mg, and 9 mg** — and isn't interchangeable milligram-for-milligram with Rybelsus.[[2]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=27f15fac-7d98-4114-a2ec-92494a91da98) Those are the same numbers as Wegovy's step-up doses.

So the strength alone doesn't tell you which product you have. **Check the brand name on your bottle**, and tell every prescriber and pharmacist exactly which semaglutide product you take.

## Why the Dose Is So Different

The weight-management tablet uses a **much higher dose** (25 mg) than the diabetes tablet (up to 14 mg) because a stronger effect is needed for meaningful weight loss. In its main study, adults taking oral semaglutide 25 mg lost about **13.6% of their body weight** on average over 64 weeks, compared with about 2% on placebo. About 8 in 10 people lost at least 5% of their weight, and about half lost 15% or more.[[1]](https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2500969)

Wegovy tablets step up in 30-day stages — 1.5 mg, then 4 mg, then 9 mg, then 25 mg from day 91.[[3]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=ee06186f-2aa3-4990-a760-757579d8f77b) Full schedule: [oral Wegovy dosing](/learn/oral-wegovy-dosing).

**Never take Rybelsus and Wegovy tablets at the same time.** They're the same drug, so that would be a double dose. This also includes the injectable versions (Ozempic and Wegovy shots) — you should only be on one semaglutide product at a time. ## How to Take Either Tablet (Very Important)

Only a small fraction of each tablet is absorbed, and only when it's taken correctly:[[4]](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40265-021-01499-w)[[5]](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40262-021-01025-x)

1. Take **one tablet in the morning, on an empty stomach**, right after you wake up.
2. Swallow it **whole** with **no more than a few sips of plain water** (up to 4 ounces / 120 mL). No coffee, juice, or other drinks.
3. **Wait at least 30 minutes** before eating, drinking anything else, or taking your other pills.
4. Don't split, crush, or chew the tablet.
5. Take it **once a day, every day**. If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next dose the following morning — don't double up.

Both are started at a low dose and slowly increased. The step-up helps your body adjust and reduces stomach side effects. Follow the exact schedule your prescriber or pharmacist gives you. What the first weeks feel like: [first month on an oral GLP-1](/learn/first-month-on-oral-glp1).

## Common Side Effects

The most common side effects of both are **stomach-related**: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, and burping. They're usually **mild to moderate, happen most when starting or increasing the dose, and tend to improve over time.**[[6]](https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/10.1001/jama.2025.11153)

What helps:

- Eat smaller meals, and stop eating when you feel full
- Avoid greasy, fried, or very rich foods
- Drink enough fluids, especially if you have vomiting or diarrhea
- Add fiber and stay active to ease constipation

## When to Call Your Prescriber

Contact your care team promptly if you have:

- **Severe or lasting stomach pain**, especially pain that spreads to your back — a possible sign of [pancreas inflammation](/learn/pancreatitis-and-glp1s)
- **Ongoing vomiting or diarrhea** that keeps you from drinking fluids
- **Signs of [gallbladder problems](/learn/gallbladder-problems-on-glp1s)** — pain in the upper right belly, fever, or yellowing of the skin or eyes
- **[Low blood sugar](/learn/glp1s-and-low-blood-sugar)** — shakiness, sweating, confusion; more likely if you also take insulin or certain other diabetes medicines
- Any **severe allergic reaction** — trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or throat

## Important Safety Notes

- These medicines should **not** be used by people with a personal or family history of **medullary thyroid cancer** or a condition called **MEN 2**.
- Tell your prescriber if you've had **pancreatitis**, **gallbladder disease**, or **kidney problems**.
- If you're **pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding**, talk with your prescriber; these medicines are generally not recommended. See [GLP-1s and pregnancy](/learn/glp1s-and-pregnancy).
- Tell your surgical or anesthesia team you take semaglutide **before any planned surgery or procedure with sedation**, because it slows stomach emptying.

## The Short Version

Wegovy tablets and Rybelsus are both oral semaglutide, taken the same way — but **Rybelsus is for type 2 diabetes** at up to 14 mg, and **Wegovy tablets are for weight management** at 25 mg. They aren't interchangeable, and you should never take both. Because some tablet strengths overlap across brands, always check the brand name on your bottle.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Rybelsus the same as the Wegovy pill?

They contain the same active drug, semaglutide, but they are different products and are not interchangeable. Rybelsus is approved for type 2 diabetes and comes in 3, 7, and 14 mg tablets. Wegovy tablets are approved for long-term weight management and build up to a 25 mg daily maintenance dose — much higher than the diabetes tablet.

### Can Rybelsus be used for weight loss?

Rybelsus is approved only for type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss. Any weight loss on it is modest and isn't its main purpose, and its highest dose (14 mg) is well below the 25 mg Wegovy tablet dose studied for weight management. Using it for weight loss would be off-label; ask your prescriber what applies to you.

### How much weight do people lose on Wegovy tablets?

In the main study (OASIS 4), adults taking oral semaglutide 25 mg lost about 13.6% of their body weight on average over 64 weeks, compared with about 2% on placebo. About 8 in 10 people lost at least 5% of their weight. Results vary from person to person.

### Can I take Rybelsus and Wegovy tablets together?

No. They are the same drug, so taking both would be a double dose. You should only be on one semaglutide product at a time — that includes Rybelsus, Ozempic (injection or tablets), and Wegovy (injection or tablets).
